Traveling to Qatar With a Pet

Qatar is a fascinating country with rich history and culture which serves as a sought-after travel destination for many. If you are planning to visit Qatar with a pet, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the legal requirements concerning the import of animals into the Persian Gulf nation. In this guide, we will delve into the relevant guidelines, recommendations, and procedures that will guarantee you have a smooth journey and a comfortable stay in Qatar, along with your furry companion.

Rules and Requirements for Safe and Pleasant Travel

In order for your pet to be allowed entry into Qatar, it is mandatory that they meet all necessary veterinary standards and documents which confirm their good health.

Microchipping. Since 2011, Qatar has implemented a compulsory microchipping process for all imported animals. The microchip contains a unique ID number which aids in identification of the animal.
Vaccination. Vaccination is a compulsory requirement for the entry of pets into Qatar. It is important that the animal has received up-to-date vaccinations against rabies and other diseases. Documentation confirming their vaccination history is mandatory to ensure that the animal is healthy and safe. Without the proper records, the animal may not be allowed to enter the country.
Rabies Antibody Titer Test. УThis is a test designed to measure the amount of antibodies present in the animal's body in response to rabies virus exposure. It is crucial that the level of antibodies is at least 0.5 IU/ml to meet the requirements for importation into Qatar. The rabies test can only be performed by certified laboratories, and the list of approved labs can be found on the official website of the European Commission.
Dehelmintization. The animal must receive treatment against worms or provide the results of a recent helminthiasis analysis within a month prior to departure.
International Certificate and Veterinary passport. At the border of the country, pet owners are expected to present either an international pet passport issued by the state veterinary authority or an international certificate. At the border, pet owners should have an international pet passport issued by the state veterinary authority or an international certificate with notes indicating that the animals are healthy and vaccinated against rabies. These documents must be issued within three days ahead of crossing the border into Qatar. A veterinarian certificate or pet passport for the animal's health is a mandatory requirement for entering the country.

Flight

When flying with Qatar Airways, the national airline of the country, there are certain requirements in the transportation of animals:

1. The airline forbids the transportation of dogs in the aircraft cabin. Instead, such animals must be boarded onto the cargo hold of the aircraft.

2. There are no specific limitations on the number of animals transported via Qatari Airways' flights, but the terms may differ between various aircraft models. It is advisable to contact Qatar Airways' representative office for a reserved pet seat. It is strongly encouraged to contact the Qatari Airways representative office in order to inform them that you would like to travel with your pet at least 48 hours before departure.

3. For the safety of the animal, Qatar Airways does not accept:

  • Animals younger than twelve (12) weeks.
  • Fragile / weak animals.
  • Female animals with suckling young – carriage will only be permitted on the basis of a veterinary certificate stating that both mother and young are fit to travel.
  • Cats or dogs which are more than six (6) weeks pregnant - carriage will only be accepted if a veterinary certificate certifies that the animal is fit to travel and there is no risk of birth during the journey.
  • Certain breeds of dogs and cat (such as snub-nosed breeds) as they are susceptible to increased risk of heat stroke when exposed to temperatures above 21 degrees Centigrade, or when under stress.

Dogs with a weight of over 75 kg must be transported using the dedicated cargo transportation services offered by Qatar Airways.

The container must have ventilation openings, must also be of an adequate size, suitable design and of sufficient strength to prevent escape. The owner supply food and water for the animal in the travelling container or kennel. Small containers must measure no more than 175 cm in length, medium containers must measure no more than 217 cm, and large containers must have dimensions of no more than 245 cm to be compatible with Qatari Airways' regulations. For the animal’s wellbeing, Qatar Airways reserves the right to refuse carriage for any animal if the container is too small.
